Sefer Torat HaBayit HaAroch with a dedication to a groom on his wedding day in the handwriting of Rabbi Menachem Katz Prostez, one of the great Hungarian rabbis, at the time when he studied in Pressburg at the yeshiva of his primary rabbi, the Chatam Sofer.
Rabbi Menachem Katz wrote the dedication on behalf of “The group of young men here” as it was their custom to give a gift to a groom on his wedding day.
On page 42, a short cut-off handwritten comment. It is likely that this a correction that he heard from the Chatam Sofer.
Rabbi Menachem Katz Prostez (1795-1891), served as rabbi of Tzelem for over 50 years, and was one of the greatest rabbis in the country. He studied under the Chatam Sofer for 15 years and was very close to him – for several years he lived in the Chatam Sofer’s house and ate at his table, and his rabbi considered him to be a member of the family. His teachings and novellae were collected in the book Toldot V’Chiddushei Rabbi Menachem Katz Prostez (Bnei Brak, 1990).
