* Official letter of Rabbi Chaim Hammer son of Rabbi Yaakov Yosef of Sniatyn which was sent to Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog in Jerusalem on the eve of the Holocaust, [February 28, 1939].
In this emotive letter, Rabbi Chaim Hammer, rabbi and dayan of the city of Sniatyn, Poland, comes with “tears and begging” in a request to save his life, after the previous letter that he sent was denied and he felt “like a servant whose master pours boiling water on his face.” The letter is written in great distress and cries: “Please look, please have mercy, and please save.” Rabbi Chaim Hammer was murdered in Sniatyn in 1940. Most of the members of the community and their families were murdered in the Holocaust in the city and in the nearby forests by Romanian and German soldiers in the years 1941-1942. Very fine condition.
