Letter by the gaon Rabbi Chaim Pinchas Klein, Av Beit Din of Selish, to his son-in-law Rabbi Moshe Chaim Segal Litch Rosenbaum, Av Beit Din of Kleinwardein. Selish [1813]. A very interesting letter: Rabbi Pinchas Chaim was asked by his son-in-law about an idea to build a carriage for carrying the deceased to the cemetery – Rabbi Pinchas responds firmly that what has been customary until now should not be changed [as per the author of Chatam Sofer’s tradition not to change any custom] and moreover, it is better to take care of the living than the deceased and give the money that would have been invested in the carriage to honest poor people!! And this will benefit the deceased more. Undoubtedly, this letter faithfully represents the teaching method and mood of the greatest rabbis of Hungary. The gaon Rabbi Pinchas Klein, was the son, disciple and successor of his father, the righteous gaon Rabbi Shmuel Shmelke Klein, rabbi of Selish – one of the greatest tzaddikim of Hungary. He also studied with the author of Ktav Sofer in Pressburg. Beginning in 1875, he succeeded his great father as rabbi of Selish, continuing until his own passing in 1923. Rabbi Pinchas Chaim was involved in the leadership and his opinion had great influence on the the Jews of Hungary. His Torah and history appear in the book Chayei Pinchas. In his signature, he refers to his great father in the following manner: Pinchas Chaim, the youth, son of the gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Shmuel Shmelke ztz”l. [1] leaf. Ink on paper. 21×17 cm.
