Chacham Yitzchak Chadad [1780-1855] was one of the first dayanim in Djerba. He was known for his extensive breadth of Torah knowledge, and he left behind many novellae. After his passing, his sons endeavored, and published his novellae. Three books, Karnei Re’em , Zera Yitzchak , and Toldot Yitzchak are the first books to be printed by rabbis of Djerba – one of the oldest Jewish communities in the world.
Rabbi Shmuel Heller [1803-1884] was rabbi and leader of the Ashkenazic community of Safed for over 40 years. He saw the Seer of Lublin conducting the Pesach seder and attested that he saw all his inner organs as if his body and clothing were transparent. There are those who claim that since then, he received much knowledge in medicine, to the extent that the sick from the entire area would come to him for healing, gentiles as well as Jews. After his rabbi, Rabbi Avraham Dov of Oorotch, author of Bat Ayin , passed away in 1840, Rabbi Shmuel became the leading figure in the Yishuv leadership until his own passing. He was also close to the greatest tzaddikim in the diaspora, who relied on him for the leadership of the community in Safed. His books include: Derech Nesher (Seini, 1829), Kavod Melachim – regarding burning clothes at the hilulah of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai (Jerusalem, 1874), and Refuot V’Segulot (Jerusalem, 1907).
