Torah-scroll-shaped postcard with a thick fabric “mantle” embroidered with a Torah crown, orange butterfly-shaped postcard with tablets of the ten commandments on it, postcard with fabric with flowers protruding, postcard with an embossed glass of wine, spice tower and Lebanon wine bottle and the inscription ‘אגוט וואך אונד א גוט יאהר’ [‘A good week and a good year’], and more.
Eight were used, some are with undivided backs, overall very fine condition.

Shana Tova postcards printed especially for Rabbi Menachem Dovber Dagotzky with an acrostic poem of the year תרע”ז) 1917) and the initials of his name M. D. Dagotzky, impressive postcard with words for the new-year’s symbol of the apple dipped in honey ‘יהי רצון כו’ שתחדש עלינו שנה טובה ומתוקה’ [‘May it be His will that the year is renewed as a good and sweet year’], postcard with the musical notes for Kol Nidrei, postcard published in 1908 with long new year greetings in Yiddish, Shana Tova card with the scroll of Esther in micrography, postcard with the image of a boy standing between predatory beasts hinting to the verse ‘וגר זאב עם כבש’ [‘and the wolf with dwell with the sheep’] in the end of days and the inscription ‘והיה באחרית הימים’ [‘and it will be at the end of days’].
Four were sent in the mail.
1. Shanah Tovah postcard published by Wiener Werkstäte produced between 1907 and 1918 – from a series designed by the best designers of the period (including Kokoschka and Agon Shiloh) considered the most important and impressive art-nouveau postcards.
2-3.Shana Tova postcard in lithographic print with views of neighborhoods in Jerusalem and in the Land of Israel, published by Max Victor and souvenir postcard published by Shmuel Beck [both with undivided backs] – sent in the mail.
4. Postcard depicting workers watering an orchard in Petach Tikvah, published by Y. M. Shishah HaLevi.
5. Postcard depicting the national celebration of Pesach in Rechovot published by Max Wolf, Berlin [sent in the mail].
Overall very fine condition.
Rare Shana Tova card – opens. The outer cover has a relief of a house near a lake and flowers. The interior of the card has a picture of Theodor Herzl printed in gilt ink beside a star of David with ‘ציון’ [‘Tziyon’] written in it, and the text ‘ לשנה טובה תכתבו ותחתמו’ [‘May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year’], and the text of the blessing in Yiddish. Sent by Mr. & Mrs. Jacob Makofski and Son of Leeds, England in 1909.
Size [open]: 10×15 cm. Handwritten dedication on the back. Fine condition.
Shana Tova photomontage. In the center, a figure of a Jewish woman with a scarf wrapped around her head and the inscription ‘לשנה טובה תכתבו תרפ”ו 1926’ [‘May you be inscribed for a good year 1926’] and ‘להתראות לשנה הבאה בארץ ישראל’ [‘See you next year in the Land of Israel’]. The two original pictures from which the Shana Tova was done are attached, the photographer’s stamp is on the reverse of one of the photographs: Rembrandt Photo Studio, Tel Aviv, Land of Israel.
Divided on the back for use as a postcard, very fine condition.
Shana Tova souvenir postcard from the British conquest of Palestine: IN MEMORY OF THE BRITISH TROOPS VICTORY IN THE HOLY LAND published by Leib Kahane, Jerusalem.
Text printed on the reverse: ‘שאלו שלום ירושלם’ [‘Ask after the well-being of Jerusalem’] and ‘חדש עלינו שנה טובה’ [Renew a good year upon us’] and blessings in Yiddish with a blank line for filling in the sender’s name. Rare.
