Ashkenazic translation in square letters to the hymns at the end of the haggada. This copy has an additional illustrated title page between the Hebrew and English ones. It was originally the title page for a Machzor per the Polish customs (London, 1806), but with a sticker at center that bears the name of the Haggada and the year of its printing. Leaf [1] at the end: אלמעכטיגקר גאט נון בויא דיין טעמפל שירה. The Haggada was printed in London 1849, with the addition of a sticker noting the publisher’s new address and new date. This rare haggada is not listed by Yaari. It is listed by Otzar Haggadot according to a copy in a private collection. Otzar Haggadot 1276. Original, English binding. Stains. Very fine condition.

This copy has an additional illustrated title page between the Hebrew and English ones, originally the title page of a Machzor per Polish customs (London, 1806). Unique variation: At the center of the title page, over the words of the Machzor, there is a sticker with the printed name of the Haggada, the publisher’s name and the year 5596 (!). Birds’ Head Haggadah, written and illustrated in 13th century Germany. Magnificent facsimile, with a volume of introductions and research articles. Numbered copy. Tarshish publishing, Jerusalem. Printed in Vienna 1965. 2 volumes. 28 cm. The Birds’ Head Haggadah is the earliest illuminated haggadah preserved in its entirety. It includes Biblical and midrashic illustrations, text illustrations and customs, and pictures of the future redemption. The Haggadah’s name is taken from the illustrated human figures which have long-beaked birds’ heads. There is no definitive explanation for the use of the birds’ heads, though it is apparently connected to the Biblical prohibition against making an idol or picture. Magnificent facsimile printed under the guidance of M. Spitzer of Tarshish publishing. Number 373 of 600 copies. Deluxe format. Two volumes within an original cardboard slipcase. Excellent condition.
