Background: Rabbi Moshe Kalphon HaKohen (1874-1950) was the foremost rabbi of Djerba of his time. He was a righteous, saintly person, who was venerated by Jews and non-Jews alike. He served as dayan in Djerba for decades. During the last fifteen years of his life, he served as Av Beit Din. He was a prominent posek who received questions from throughout Tunisia. He guarded religious observance, instituted important bylaws in Djerba and taught many dayanim and rabbis. His many letters were printed in the five sections of Shu"t Shoel V'Nishal, five sections, Brit Kehuna, Halacha L'Moshe, Chukat Moshe, Darash Moshe and others.
