Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin, Rabbi Aharon Kotler and others utilized this method. But it was most famously used by Rabbi Aryeh Levin in 1950 to identify the corpses of 12 soldiers of the Convoy of 35, which were otherwise unidentifiable.
