Rabbi Chaim Hirschensohn (1857-1935) was one of the first philosophers of Religious Zionism. He was born in Safed to parents who were among the early members of Chovavei Zion. In 1885 he set out for a journey to his relatives in Russia and Germany. While in Frankfurt he was influenced by the literature of Jewish wisdom and began to publish the monthly journal Hamisdronah, in collaboration with great Jewish thinkers such as Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer, Dr. David Hoffman, Zev Yavetz, and others, with the goal of arranging the Talmudic values in encyclopedic fashion. Due to excommunication from the zealots of Jerusalem, he immigrated to Turkey, and from there to America. He was one of the first to join the Mizrachi movement and was its representative at the Sixth Zionist Congress in Basel.
