Letter from Rabbi David Morgenstern from the time of the seclusion of his father, Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotzk. Kotzk, [1855].
In this letter, written during the lifetime of his father, Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotzk, Rabbi David addresses one of his father’s chassidim and asks “that he help him again this year with the places that he traveled last year, to collect the debts from our people, for the house of [our master, my father..] may he live long, good days…and Hashem should give him success.”

Rabbi Dovid Morgenstern (1809-1873) was the second Admor of Kotzk. He was a disciple of Rabbi Simcha Bunim of Peshischa, and primarily a disciple of his father. He was close to his father throughout his life. Rabbi David’s position was emphasized during the 20 years that his father, Rabbi Menachem Mendel, was in seclusion. He was almost the only person who was allowed to serve his father and the exclusive agent between his father and his Polish chassidim. After his father’s death in 1859, he succeeded his position in Kotzk. Like his father, his Torah thoughts are short and sharp. In 1907, Ahavat David HaShalem, was published, a compilation of his Torah and biography.
