Lengthy handwritten halachic responsum by Rabbi Moshe Ze’ev Wolf Halperin, rabbi of Zlatipola [Zlotopol, Ukraine], sent to the gaon and well-known adjudicator, Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Maragliot, author of Beit Ephraim. Rabbi Moshe Ze’ev Halperin was born to his father, Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Halperin, son of Rabbi Mordechai ‘HaChazan’ of Zaslev, a disciple of the Ba’al Shem Tov. He married a daughter of Rabbi Chaim Krasner and was a brother-in-law of the author of Chavat Da’at. By request of his grandfather, the Alter of Shpola, he accepted the position of rabbi in Zlotopol, where he served as a rabbi for dozens of years. The responsum in the letter is about an emissary for a divorce document which the husband annulled. Rabbi Moshe Ze’ev Wolf also dealt with releasing an agunah and his responsum on the matter was printed in the Shu”t Noda BaShe’arim Part I siman 13. Rabbi Moshe Ze’ev corresponded on halachic matters with the greatest rabbis of his generation, and some of them turned to him with questions, among them: Rabbi Shlomo Kluger, Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Maragliot, Rabbi Avraham Jaffe, author of Mishnat Avraham, and the Admo”r, author of Tzemach Tzeddek of Lubavitch, in whose book of responsa there are several responsa from him on the topic of agunahs, and more. Rabbi Moshe Ze’ev passed away c. 1850 and was buried in Zlotopol. He authored “Shu”t Zichron Moshe” and even prepared it for print. However, it was not printed and was eventually lost. His son, Rabbi Chaim, succeeded him as rabbi of Zlotopol and his grandsons served as rabbis in several places.
