Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv [1910-2012] was born in Šiauliai, Lithuania, an only child born to his parents after seventeen years of marriage. In 1924, he immigrated to Palestine with his family and settled in Meah Shearim, Jerusalem. As a boy, he assisted his grandfather, kabalist Rabbi Shlomo Elyashiv with his prominent work “Leshem Shvo V’Achlma”. He studied in various beit midrashim in Jerusalem, served as dayan on the rabbinate’s Supreme Beit Din and was the foremost halachic authority of the generation. His daughter Batsheva a”h married Rabbi Chaim Kanivesky, the son of Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky – the “Steipler”.
