Sefer HaZikaron – elucidation on Rashi’s commentary on the Torah by Rabbi Avraham HaLevi Bakrat, of the Spanish exiles, written in Tunisia.
Published by Rabbi Eliezer Ashkenazi from the manuscript which was hidden in Tunisia. The book was published in 1845 in three editions: for Europe, for Italy and for North Africa. This one is the European edition.
Scribal dedication in the middle of the title page from the time of printing: “To the honorable … Rabbi Shlomo Yaish …” and another owner’s signature.
Rabbi Avraham HaLevi Bakrat [d. 1516] was also called Rabbi Avraham son of Shlomo HaTzarfati. He was a Spanish sage, philosopher, kabbalist and liturgical poet. He served as rabbi in Málaga. After the expulsion, he moved to Tunisia. He also authored a compilation on rules of vowelization, and more. Some of his liturgical poetry appears in Machzor Algier , including “Mi Chamochah Abir Ya’akov.”
