The gaon Rabbi Avraham Binyamin Ze’ev (Wolf) Hamburg [1770-1850], rosh yeshivah of the Furth yeshivah and one of the leading rabbis of Ashkenaz during the early 19th century. He refused offers to serve as Av Beit Din of Hamburg and Mainz. Rabbi Hamburg conducted a difficult campaign against the authorities’ attempts to include secular studies in the Furth yeshivah. In April 1828, the yeshivah was closed down by instruction of the authorities. Rabbi Hamburg continued to deliver underground lessons in his house until in 1830 when he was prohibited from doing so. His two major compositions were Sha’ar HaZekenim VeBeit Maloh and Simlat Binyamin .
