Talmud Yerushalmi. Seder Kadshim. Famed forgery of Shlomo Yeuda HaSephardi – Friedlander. [1906-1909].
Section one: Zevachim, Erchin, [1909]. [8], 100 leaves, 38 cm.
Section two: Chulin, Bechorot. [1906]. [9], 78, [1], 47 leaves. 36 cm.
There is only Babylonian Talmud on Seder Kadshim, which relates to the work in the Holy Temple. The aforementioned author related that he purchased an ancient manuscript from the Benveneste family in Turkey and discovered the Yerushalmi Talmud on Kadshim. He succeeded in securing approbations from prominent public figures, including noted rabbis and researches. However, a year into the printing, when the first section was seen by Torah scholars, it was revealed to be an artistic forgery and the stories revolving around its discovery were false.
Two volumes were printed, including Tractates Zevachim, Erchin, Chulin and Bechorot. The second volume was printed before the first volume. Each volume has a lengthy preface ‘validating’ the authenticity of the book. In the preface of the second volume, the author primarily defends the book against those who claimed it was a forgery and publicized their opinion.
Two title pages for each section. The volume of Tracate Chullin was printed on the back of the general Hebrew title page, along with the Latin title page that is not included in all copies. This is a complete copy, with all approbations, the preface and all printed tractates.
Different bindings. Tear with loss to leaf 1 of Tractate Zevachim. The first volume features large margins – of different lengths. Not cropped, and unopened – as it left the press.
