Three letters written and signed by Religious-Zionist leader and Rosh Yeshiva of Merkaz HaRav, Rabbi Zvi Yehuda HaKohen Kook, son and successor of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook. Dated: Adar-Nissan 1974. Written on Rabbi Kook’s letterhead, opposing Mafdal’s merger with the leftist government headed by Golda Meir in 1974. Rabbi Kook expresses his opposition to Mafdal’s participation in the government with very strong, harsh terms and even threatens to rescind his support for the “Mizrachi” movement if they join the government. “If you join this government, chalila, and, chas v’shalom, rachmana l’tzlan, I will immediately publicize throughout the world that I no longer have a relationship with the Mizrachi and Mafdal, and all that I have written regarding my support during the elections is cancelled….” In a different letter, Rabbi Kook writes: “I am calling and pleading and demanding that you all get up….to rescue the Jewish Nation…from the hands of those who trample and profane the name of G-d…of three people called “ministers” who embarrass and desecrate the name of Israel with their sinful joining of this government…” One of the complaints listed in the letter is that the Mafdal agreed to the initiative to remove the religion and nationality clause on Israeli identity papers, even for a short time, and more. The letters were written when the Mafdal joined the leftist government led by Golda Meir, after the Yom Kippur War, in response to the increasing public criticism that the lessons of the Yom Kippur War were not taken into account when creating the government. This was the shortest government in the history of the States of Israel; it lasted for only a year and a half. Rabbi Zvi Yehuda HaKohen Kook [1891-1982] was the son and disciple of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook, Rosh Yeshiva of Merkaz HaRav, and spiritual leader of religious Zionism. 3 letters, 28×22 cm. All three were written and signed by the rabbi. Fold marks. Fine condition.
