Three sections in one volume:[6], 342, 183, [13], xvii, [missing 9]. 36 cm. Special print title pages for sections two and three, dozens of woodcuts, some signed.
First German edition of some sections of the writings of historian Josephus Flavius. Includes The Antiquities of the Jews, regarding Jewish history until the Great Revolt (Josephus was a commander in the Galilee and later a historian in Rome), and two additional sections about Jerusalem and the great rebellion taken from The Jewish War. This edition, with Lautenbach’s translation, served as the basis for dozens of additional editions that were published over the next centuries.
Leather-covered wooden boards with many decorations, original. Restored spine. Missing clasps. Reinforced title page. Minimal worming holes. The bottom corner of the last leaves of the end section were restored, affecting solitary letters. Missing the nine last leaves with indexes. Fine condition.

First edition of the book examining the role played by German scientists in the destruction of the Jewish people. On the endpapers, the handwritten signature of Albert Einstein. As is known, despite Einstein’s standing, the Nazis took away his scientific position and later even cancelled his German citizenship.

“Rav Tzair” (Chaim Tchernovitch) was a friend of Albert Einstein. The last chapter of the book focuses on his visit to Einstein, and he ends with the blessing “Blessed is He who gives of His wisdom to His creations.” On the last page of the book is a photograph of the two men. The author dedicated this copy to Albert Einstein.
