Yarzeit board – an impressive colored lithograph in the printing press of S. Grunwald, Timişoara [Romania], 1933. Gold ink.
A large depiction of imaginary entrance pillars to the Garden of Eden. Under the arches on the right and left are images of Rachel’s Tomb and Grab der Patriarchen [the graves of the patriarchs – the Cave of Machpela]. On the pillars are the words: labend bevor anzuzünden! in German, which means ‘the evening before the day’ – which seems to be a hint to the Next World. In the center is the name of the deceased: Shmuel Zanvil Zev, died on 20 Shevat 5793 [1933], and on the right, the date the yartzeit falls according to the Gregorian calendar each year for several years is filled out by hand.
Size: 39×29 cm.
The bottom right hand corner is cut off. Minimal stains. Fine condition.
