A long letter of Torah thoughts in the handwriting and with the signature of the Rabbi of Târgu Neamţ, Rabbi Chaim Mordechai Roller. Dated: 1933.
A halachic responsum with an in-depth discussion on the words of the Sages, the Rishonim, and the great Achronim regarding Chalav Akum. He also discusses various topics: Yayin nesech, mutav sheyihyu shogagin v’al yehihyu mezidin, customs of various countries, the story of Shimon ben Shetach who told King Yanai to stand up and they will testify about him, and more. The letter is full of interesting sentences written in a personal tone such as: “It is clear before the Almighty God that the flame of the Torah which burns in the lower floor of my heart will speak through the pen” or ” And I ask forgiveness from His Honor that I spoke harshly against him, as everyone who knows me will attest that this is not my way…and thank God that he listened to my voice which is the voice of the Torah” and more. It is interesting that he wrote “With the Help of God” at the top of each of the letter’s pages, even though it was written as one unit.
Rabbi Chaim Mordechai Roller 1868-1946. Rabbi of Târgu Neamţ for nearly 50 years. Author of ‘Shu”t Be’er Mordechai’ and Shu”t HaRashbid. A scion of Rabbi Naftali Katz and the Maharal of Prague, a disciple of Rabbi David Moshe Friedman of Chortkov and Rabbi Yitzchak Friedman of Bohush. Known for his holy customs – he spent most of the day studying Torah wearing a prayer shawl and adorned in Rabbeinu Tam tefillin. He studied Kabbalah each Shabbat from midnight until daybreak. It is told that he went out to search for a prayer quorum during a riot against Jews, was attacked by a gang and miraculously saved from them, as a result of which he published his book ‘Borchi Nafshi’. He immigrated to Israel in 1946 and settled in Jerusalem. Rabbi Eliezer Zussia of Skulen said about him: “There is almost no-one like him in several countries who is great in Torah and character traits”. The “Roller” study house in Ashkelon was established in his memory, as was the “Be’er Chaim Mordechai” Talmud Torah of the Vizhnitz chassidut in Bnei Brak. He was very active in permitting agunot to remarry, after the Holocaust he permitted the aguna Gittel, daughter of Rabbi Meir Arik to remarry. His short work “Kuntress Be’er Chaim Mordechai” was used in many cases after the Holocaust to permit agunot to remarry.
