“The influence of the mitzvah of tefillin will draw towards me … a long life and an abundance of sacred influence”
Large and special pair of tefillin, made of behemah dakah leather, including the s hel-rosh and shel-yad tefillin straps (the tefillin are complete, but without the parshiyot ). The Chazon Ish laid these tefillin for decades. The marks from the Chazon Ish’s many years of use are evident on the tefillin. Yet the batim are certainly mehudar , as they are in the same condition today as they were the last day the Chazon Ish used them.
This is a segulah object of rare importance, by which the rabbinic leader of the generation bound himself to his Creator on a day-to-day basis most of the years of his life. He bound their sanctity close to his heart – the heart of the Jewish people, and on his head – his mighty mind, when he poured his heart out in his famous prayers by which he released himself from materialism, as is well-known, and with which he worked his supernatural salvations and wonders, like one of the ancients.
These tefillin were produced in Lithuania, made of behemah dakah leather, as was customary in previous generations (nowadays, with technological advancement, tefillin are produced from behemah gassah leather). Late in the Chazon Ish’s life, after he ascended to the Land of Israel, he exchanged them for new behemah gassah leather tefillin, and these tefillin here were gifted to his close associate Rabbi Avraham Horowitz, who kept them in his library, as specified in the attached signed confirmation.
Rabbi Horowitz relates in his book Orchot Rabbeinu (I, p 81; photocopy enclosed) about these tefillin: “Abroad and when he first came to the Land of Israel, the Chazon Ish used behemah dakah tefillin from one hide. They were slightly larger than the tefillin that he used in the Land of Israel. After he arrived, he ordered batim from gassah leather and new parshiyot . … Then, I received his dakot tefillin from him that he had used abroad, with the straps.”
Specifications: Tefillin boxes sized 40×40 mm. Titutura and ma’abarta size: 48×74 mm. Includes shel-rosh and shel-yad straps. Inside the batim , in the space designated for the parshiyot , there are notes handwritten by Rabbi Avraham Horowitz, inscribed “The Chazon Ish’s tefillin shel rosh ” and “The Chazon Ish’s tefillin shel yad “; “The Chazon Ish’s straps.” The tefillin are placed in an antique brown velvet case which is placed in a new, luxury leather and fur case embroidered in gold letters indicating that it contains the Chazon Ish’s tefillin: “התפילין של רשכבה”ג מרן החזון אי”ש זצללה”ה”
