The authorization of the copy of a document regarding the sale of a courtyard in Jerusalem, confirmed and upheld by the signature of the Rishon L’Zion Rabbi Yonah Moshe Navon and the scholars of his beit din: Rabbi Yitzchak Kovo and Rabbi David Mizrachi. [1813].
[1] leaf. 21×30 cm. The original document was signed by Rabbi Yehudah Aroatz and Rabbi Rafael Asher HaLevi, who were also among the great rabbis of Jerusalem. The document was copied “due to the fact that it began to tear on its folds therefore we had to copy it.”
1. The Rishon L’Zion Rabbi Yitzchak Kovo – born in Salonika in 1770, immigrated to Israel and was appointed as Rishon L’Zion following the death of Rabbi Avraham Gagin. Towards the end of his life, at the age of 84, he went as an emissary to Egypt and died in Alexandria in 1854.
2. The Rishon L’Zion Rabbi Yonah Moshe Navon – the grandson of Rabbi Yonah Navon, author of Nechpah B’Kesef, served as an emissary of Jerusalem and a dayan in the beit din, and from 1837 served as the Rishon L’Zion until his death in 1841. Known as a great genius, deep and sharp, his novellae were printed in part two of Nechpah B’Kesef.
3. The Dayan Rabbi David Mizrachi – One of the scholars of Jerusalem, a dayan on the beit din of Rabbi Yonah Moshe Navon. Gave approbations to books along with the scholars of Jerusalem. (Refer to: Divrei Shalom Yerushalayim, 1843).
