The binder before us contains letters appealing to Dr. Buxbaum and his letters of response. The documents mainly deal with gema”ch loans and donations by Dr. Buxbaum to rabbis, institutions and the needy. The documents’ contents and their writers have not been examined.
Mordechai Buxbaum (1898-1959) was a Chareidi jurist and public figure. He was one of the assistants of Béla Kun, a Communist leader who served for a short time as leader Hungary. Later he studied with his uncle Rabbi Yehoshua Buxbaum in Galanta. He immigrated to the Land of Israel, settling in the Old City of Jerusalem and was close to leading rabbis and public figures, including Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, Rabbi Yosef Tzvi Dushinsky, Dr. Moshe Wallach and others. He served as the legal counsel for Agudat Israel and for the deputy mayor of Jerusalem. His son Rabbi Yosef founded Machon Yerushalayim.
