The Etz Chaim Yeshiva in the Golders Green neighborhood of London, the capital of England, is one of the oldest yeshivahs in Western Europe and the oldest yeshivah in London. During the late 19th century, the foundations of the Etz Chaim Yeshiva were laid by Rabbi Moshe Yitzchak Segal, who later became rosh yeshivah of the Manchester Yeshiva. During the early 1920s, the yeshivah expanded and developed. Rabbi Yosef Green, a close associate of the Chafetz Chaim, was therefore hired as the rosh yeshivah. For a period, the position was also held by the Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook. Later, the mashgiach Rabbi Eliyahu Lopian was invited to serve as rosh yeshivah, a position he held for more than 20 years and which gave the yeshivah its honorable reputation. The development of the yeshivah was enabled by the contributions of philanthropists David Sassoon and his wife Flora, and the Baron Louis Montagu. Alumni of the yeshivah include chief rabbis of Britain: The Lord Baron Rabbi Immanuel Jacobowitz and the Lord Baron Rabbi Jonathan Sacks.
