Signed by Rabbi Menachem Mendel Alter, the av”d of
Pabianice and president of the Agudah; and vice president Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Kanal. In the letter, they express their sorrow about the holy casualties killed in the riots of 1936.
Rabbi Menachem Mendel Alter (1878-1942) was the youngest son of the ‘Sfat Emet’ of Gur, and one of the leaders of Polish Jewry between the wars. He was the chairman of the Agudat Rabbanim of Poland and a member of the Moetzet Gedolei HaTorah of Agudat Yisrael. At the time of the Holocaust, he was one of the leaders of the ultra-Orthodox population in the Warsaw Ghetto. He was killed together with his family in the Treblinka extermination camp.
