Handwritten manuscript on large format leaf – eulogy handwritten by the gaon Rabbi Simchah Luzzato upon the passing of the gaon Rabbi Yehudah Leib Saraval – both prominent leaders of Italian Jewry of all generations. [Venice, c. 1617.] The eulogy deals with clarification of the astonishing reality of bad things happening to good people and good things happening to bad people. “There are therefore three reasons for why suffering comes to tzaddikim: One is due to their sins, two, is that they are punished for the sins of the generation, and three, is to test and refine them. Such was the righteous and pious, the deceased, Rabbi Leib Saraval, who suffered tremendously with equanimity – through losing his older sons, losing his money, and finally, with his passing …” Written at the end of his eulogy: “Eulogy I gave upon the passing of Rabbi Leib Saraval ztzk”l.” This eulogy is unknown to this day!
