The gaon Rabbi Chaim Elazar Shapira [1872-1937] was an Admo”r, a kabbalist and one of the geonim of Torah and Chassidut in his generation. He led the battle against the Zionists, and was the spiritual patriarch of Satmar Chassidim. He visited the Land of Israel to meet with his friend the “Saba Kaddishah,” Rabbi Shlomo Eliezer Elfandri, to discuss his questions in kabbalah with him. He used the same opportunity to establish the Batei Munkacs neighborhood in Jerusalem. The Divrei Chaim of Sanz said of him: A person like this descends to the world only once every few generations.
