Emet U’Mishpat by Joseph Ritter von Wertheimer of Vienna [refutes anti-Semitic claims, primarily those lodged against the Jews of Austria]. Dorhovitch, 1883. Only edition.
40, [4] pages. Hebrew and German title pages, with an additional jacket title page in yellow, 20 cm.
Unique work from an Austrian Jewish nobleman, president of the Jewish Israelitische Allianz zu Wien. The emperor conferred on him the Order of the Iron Crown. His words are written in German, and were translated into Hebrew by Aharon Hirsh Zupnik. Wertheimer opposes those who libel the Jews, particularly the Jews of Austria. For example, he surveyed the Austrian prisons to disclose how many Jews committed crimes in relation to their proportion in the general society. He also surveyed the professions of Austrian Jews, their contribution to the Austrian economy and more.
