Emotional letter handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Yosef Shomo Kahaneman of Ponovezh, to activist and rescue worker Rabbi Yisrael Chaim Eis, with a request for literally life-saving assistance for the daughter of the secretary of the Telz yeshivah, Rabbi Abba Schwartz, and relative of the “gaon of Israel, the ga”avad of Telz, ztz”l,” “whose illness is critical.” Kovno, 1923. Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman [1887-1969], the “Ponovezher Rav,” was the rabbi and rosh yeshivah of Ponovezh in Lithuania before the Holocaust, and founder of the Ponovezh yeshivah in the Land of Israel after the Holocaust. He was the first head of the Council of Torah Sages and among the founders of Agudat Yisrael. He is considered one of those who established the Torah world in the Land of Israel after the Holocaust. He also established homes for child refugees of the Holocaust, and founded the Kiryat Ponovezh quarter in Ashdod, and the Grodno yeshivah. “Rabbi Kahaneman Street” in both Jerusalem and Bnei Brak are named after him. Rabbi Yisrael Chaim Eis [1876-1943] was one of those who established Agudat Yisrael, and a prominent activist.
