On the 1st of April, 1938, right after the Anschluss, he was arrested and sent to the Dachau internment camp. In September 1938, he was transferred to Buchenwald where he authored his noted concentration camp anthem, “Das Buchenwaldlied”. He died in Auschwitz at the end of 1942.
