Collection of historic items that shed light on the daily life in the Galanta yeshivah – one of the largest and most important yeshivahs in pre-Holocaust Europe, led by the tzaddik, the pillar of the world, the sacred Rabbi Yehoshua Buxbaum of Galanta. Galanta [Czechoslovakia], early 20th century.
* Lot of [2] ” kvitung ” receipts for the young man Yuda Rosenberg from Beit Mazon D’Yeshivat Galanta – for monthly payments for meals at the yeshivah, for the months Shevat-Adar and Iyyar, respectively. 8×13.5 cm.
It is interesting to note that the Galanta yeshivah was among the pioneering yeshivahs in that it operated a yeshivah kitchen, saving the young men from having the bother and humiliation of ” essen teg ” at homes of the locals.
* Lengthy list [3 leaves] written by one of the yeshivah students enumerating one by one, in twenty-one sections, all the problems and difficulties endured by the young men at the yeshivah, especially at the hands of the kitchen staff. [3] leaves, 11×15 cm.
Historic accounts discussing the sacred yeshivahs generally present the positive side of the yeshivahs, their study methods and the Torah greatness of their staff and students. This is a rare and important historic list that illuminates an unknown aspect of one of the largest and most important yeshivahs in Europe, with hundreds of students (and through it to the rest of the yeshivahs), directing the spotlight precisely to the shortcomings at the yeshivah, the problems and issues the yeshivah students had to deal with in those days.
For example:
“From Rosh Chodesh Av until after Tisha B’Av, the young men were simply hungry” (section 11).
“Aharon Yehuda (apparently one of the workers)” is not permitted to speak using the word “you” (‘אתה’) for the young men … it creates feelings of lack and shame in the boys who all come from upright and pleasant homes” (section 2).
“She (apparently one of the workers) demands to be greeted but does not respond” (section 4)
“The coffee is very, very diluted with water” (section 13).
