Manuscript on parchment. Text of the hashkavah prayer composed especially and written down upon the passing of the renowned gaon Rabbi Ya’akov Shimshon Shabtai Sinigaliah – one of the leading sages of Italy and author of Shabbat Shel Mi . Sinigaliah, c. 1840.
Due to his deep humility, the author of Shabbat Shel Mi did not allow anything to be written on his tombstone, except for the words Chashkan BaTorah . As his son wrote in the introduction to his sefer : “Due to his extreme modesty, on the day of his last will and testament, Rabbi Ya’akov explicitly ordered that no title nor praise be written [about him] except for Chashkan BaTorah .” He is also described with these words in this prayer.
