“To this day, I have not been asked … for guarantees, because they know that I sign personally … and am responsible … so they can be absolutely certain …”
Beautiful, lengthy and important letter handwritten by the geon hamussar , “The Mashgiach, ” the gaon and tzaddik Rabbi Chaim Friedlander, mashgiach of the Ponovezh yeshivah and other yeshivahs. Bnei Brak, 1967.
The letter deals with Talmud Torah Torat Emet, established by him in Bnei Brak. The mashgiach himself negotiates with the landlord who resides in New York, and with his intransigent lawyer, regarding the draconian conditions demanded of him in the rental contract for the Talmud Torah’s mechinah apartment.
The lawyer treats the mashgiach – the gaon and tzaddik – just like the previous tenants, with his demand for grandiose guarantees, and the mashgiach, in his innocence and righteousness, for whom even giving him the whole world would not get him to go back on his word, attempts to convince the landlord’s step-son to explain to the lawyer that he need not be concerned about his promise to pay rent, as the mashgiach himself guarantees it: “To this day, I have not been asked … for guarantees for the rooms or for the yard, because they know that I sign personally on the contract, it is not a contract with a public institution … so they can be absolutely certain …”
