Letter from Admor Menachem Mendel Schneersohn of Lubavitch. [1960].
[1] leaf, letterhead, 21.5×28 cm. With his signature and revisions in his hand.
The letter was written on Lag B’Omer, the yartzheit of the Rashbi, and was sent to the Chief Rabbi of Rishon L’Tzion, Rabbi Yitzchak Rachamim. The Admor writes that Shavuot that year marks the 200th anniversary of the death of the Baal Shem Tov and suggests that the rabbis in Eretz Yisrael speak about the Baal Shem Tov, his personality, and his Torah around this date. The Admor mentions that the Baal Shem Tov’s yartzheit is on the first day of Shavuot and adds in parentheses “not like those who err, who mark it on the following day.” For generations there have been disagreements regarding the exact date of the Baal Shem Tov’s death – and here, it is definitely proven that he passed away on the 1st day of Shavuot. In the margins, the Admor writes about the Sephardic studies into the secrets of the Torah and Chassidut.
