Interesting letter from the gaon Rabbi Meir Karelitz, Av Beit Din of Lachovitz, to Rabbi Yosef Lichtman Gurewicz, rabbi of Melbourne, Australia. Jerusalem, 1943.
In this letter to his friend, Rabbi Meir Karelitz briefly relates what has happened to him from the time he left Europe until the present. He expands with enthusiasm about the Poalei Agudat Yisrael movement, which had just appointed him as their rabbi. Interesting letter relating the events of the Poalei Agudat Yisrael movement, a derivative of the historic Agudat Yisrael, against the backdrop of the events of the turbulent WWII period.
The gaon Rabbi Meir Karelitz [1877-1955], rabbi of Lachovitz, was one of the rabbinic leaders of Lithuania and the Land of Israel, and member of the Council of Torah Sages. He was the eldest brother of the Chazon Ish, and his confidant. He was a son-in-law of Rabbi Shlomo Cohen of Vilna, author of Cheshek Shlomo . He was among the founders of Va’ad HaYeshivot and a very close associate of the Chafetz Chaim and a confidant of the Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky. In the Land of Israel, he served as the rabbi of the Poalei Agudat Yisrael movement, the focus of this letter.
