The novellae of the Chazon Ish on the laws of kiddush hachodesh, as printed in Chazon Ish on Orach Chaim – Moed, sections 1-12 and in other editions is called Kuntress Kiddush HaChodesh .
In order to understand the topic of kiddush hachodesh, the Chazon Ish deals with the relevant geometry, specifically trigonometry, and writes with tremendous expertise about geometrical calculations, as well as about sine, which he refers to as בקע [beka], and cosine, which he refers to as תשלום בקע [tashlum beka]. The Chazon Ish’s fluency in various sciences is well-known, all for the purpose of Torah study. Before us is an outstanding example of this astounding fluency.
Many hand-drawn geometrical sketches by the Chazon Ish are sketched within the text of the manuscript before us. However, in the printed book, the sketches were printed at the back of the book, apparently due to printing constraints.
Rabbi Avraham Yeshayau Karelitz [1879-1953] is known by the name of his books, Chazon Ish . He was a genius and righteous person who was fluent in all disciplines of the Torah, a prime example of ‘toil in Torah.’ One of the leaders of the Ultra-Orthodox community in the Land of Israel, who guided it in the period following the establishment of the State of Israel and re-established the Torah world after the Holocaust.
