Knife for cutting challa on Shabbat – Silver [hallmarked with a crescent and crown] chasing and repousse. Germany, start of the 20th century.
The handle of the knife has chasing and repoussee that depict a Jew making kiddush on wine at the Shabbat table, the upper section bears the words לכבוד שבת. Underneath there is a form of a Shabbat menorah and the text זכור את יום השבת לקדשו and a star of David. At the edge of the handle there is text: אכלו היום כי שבת היום לה’. On both sides of the margins of the handle there are decorative grape vines and flowers.
