The gaon Rabbi Chaim Chizkiyahu Medini [1835-1905] was among the great later authorities. He served in the rabbinate in Constantinople, in Krasovzar (Crimea) and in Hebron. He was known for his diligence and genius in the revealed and hidden (aspects of Torah). He maintained correspondence with Torah leaders everywhere. He self-published his encyclopedic work, Sdei Chemed in 18 parts, as well as many other books. His large library, comprised of thousands of books, remained in the Old City of Jerusalem and was burned in its entirety with the fall of the Old City in 1948.
