Kodesh Hillulim . Tehillim with translation and commentary in Spanish by Rabbi Ya’akov Yehudah Leon-Templo. Amsterdam, 1671. Opens from left to right.
Tehillim printed for the Jewish Anusim community. The Tehillim and its Spanish translation are in parallel columns, and under them, the Spanish commentary. In the margins of the title page, there is an owner’s signature in Oriental script from the period of printing. Likewise, the flyleaf bears a handwritten inscription, also in period Oriental script, “Yehi Ratzon before Tehillim, ” followed by two slightly rubbed-out lines.
Hebrew, Latin and Spanish poems appear at the beginning of the book, including poems by Rabbi Yitzchak Abuhav, rabbi of the Sephardic community, the first American rabbi to serve in the Dutch-Sephardic colonies in South America. Many letters in Portuguese, a kind of approbation in praise of the book. This edition is dedicated to Yitzchak Schneur Texeira, one of the most affluent Jews of his time, who arranged the Swedish king’s business dealings.
