Letter from Rabbi Binyamin Mendelsohn to Rabbi Moshe Porush, with the request to urgently obtain an immigration permit for Rabbi Dov Berish Reinman, rabbi of Banila in Rumania. 18 Iyar – Lag B’Omer, 1940.
Specifications: [1] leaf paper. 21×13 cm. 11 lines in his handwriting and with his signature.
Bachground: In 1940, in the midst of WWII, Rabbi Dov Berish Reinman, rabbi of Banila, Rumania, requests a permit to immigrate to the Land of Israel, and his being rabbi of a city should ease approval of the permit. Apparently, another person had attempted to use the description of rabbi of Banila, and that is the reason his request was not approved. In this letter, Rabbi Binyamin Mendelson turns to Rabbi Moshe Porush, “A person I know personally as trustworthy and honest, from Banila in Rumania, told me what he wants to do for the above (Rabbi Reinman) who is in fact rabbi in Banila, to bring him to the Land of Israel, aside from my trust in this man that he would not deceive me, I am familiar with the truth of the matter myself.” He therefore requests from Rabbi Moshe Porush to endeavor to quickly obtain a permit.
Rabbi Moshe Porush was a communal worker and politician from Agudat Yisrael in the years preceding the establishment of the State. Rabbi Binyamin Mendelson was the rabbi of Kfar Atta, and he later established Komemiyut, where he served as rabbi until his passing.
