Letter h andwritten and signed by Rabbi Dov Ber Bornstein Av Beit Din of Botoshan [Rumania], addressed to Rabbi Leibush Ber Halpert Av Beit Din of Lespitz, 1938.
After a short negotiation regarding an incident about financial compensation between two in-law families which had been brought before him, the gaon writes: ‘And now I will use this opportunity to discuss an issue about which I had wanted to write, regarding the poor situation of the rabbis, and also that of the Torah’ and he details the humiliating attitude the rabbis receive from the leaders of the communities ‘The rabbi has ceased to be an active force and positive authority in the community, he is nothing but a despised device in the hands of the heads of the communities who are empty of any religious sentiment, and instead of serving, the religious rabbi is freed … in his place comes a Dr. of theology and the like, the situation is dangerous! The rabbi writes later that he is arranging an assembly of rabbis on the issue, and requests that he become one of the first founders of the future building to establish this assembly.
