Rabbi Shmaryahu Yitzchak Bloch was born in Lithuania in 1866. He was one of the most prominent disciples of Rabbi Itzeleh Blazer’s and was rabbinically ordained by Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan of Kovno. He was rabbi of several communities in Lithuania, and then moved to England, where he became one of the most prominent rabbis, initially in Sunderland, then in Birmingham, and finally in London, where he served until his passing in 1924.
