Beautiful letter of appreciation to Sir Moshe Montefiore, signed by the av beit din of Safed, the sacred Rabbi Moshe David Ashkenazi, rabbi of Tolcsva and father-in-law of the Yitev Lev of Sighet. Safed, 9 Sivan, 1850.
Additional signatory: the rebbe, Rabbi Chaim Yisrael son of Rabbi Ya’akov Dov, rabbi of Romen, who was a follower of Rabbi Yitzchak of Radivil, and later a follower of the Admo”r Rabbi Yisrael of Ruzhin.
The av beit din of Safed expresses his appreciation to Sir Montefiore in this letter for his £10 3s (ten pounds and three shillings) donation to the settlement in Safed in memory of the gvir R’ Levi Zalman. Sacred residents of Safed praise Montefiore “with the triple blessing.”
