Lengthy letter of recommendation from Rabbi Yehoshua Buxbaum, Av Beit Din of Galanta. Galanta, 1938.
Lyrical letter full of song and praise, given as a recommendation for his disciple Rabbi Menachem Ya’akov Rosenzweig of Nitra, who is ascending to Jerusalem to study.
The gaon Rabbi Yehudah Buxbaum – the rabbi of Galanta [1878-1944] was one of the leading rabbis and rashei yeshivah in Hungary. He was a disciple of Rabbi Moshe Yosef Hoffman of Pupa, and Rabbi Shmuel Rosenberg, rabbi of Unsdorf, who said about him: “He is perhaps choicest of all my disciples in the whole world.” He was close to leading Admo”rim and followed the rabbi of Shinowa, who loved and admired him very much. The Admo”r Rabbi Yissachar Dov of Belz said of him, “He is so lofty and exalted.” The Admo”r of Vizhnitz stated that he is “righteous and pure.” The gaon of Tchebin said that his image is that of a G-dly angel. He served in the Galanta rabbinate after Rabbi Yosef Tzvi Dushinsky. His yeshivah in Galanta was one of the most prominent in Hungary; he taught thousands of students there. He sanctified G-d’s Name in front of his students during the Holocaust when he was taken with them to the Auschwitz concentration camp, before he was murdered: “Until now I have pleaded in prayer – as long as there was hope, but now we will accept the decree with joy.” His disciples founded Hitachdut HaTalmidim after the Holocaust, and they printed the books Ohr Pnei Yehoshua and Nachalei Yehoshua from his Torah thoughts.
