Letter on behalf of the Charedi residents of Jerusalem appealing to the regional government regarding their opposition to payment of a municipal educational tax, Jerusalem [1945] – tens of signatures. Stencil print and handwritten signatures.
In the letter, the Charedi residents of Jerusalem address the regional governor and explain that they cannot pay the municipal educatonal tax since the funds would support heretical educational facilities: “Since the municipal educational tax in Jerusalem is about to be levied, and the income from this tax will be used to support educational facilities of heresy which estrange their students from belief in Supreme supervision, our Talmud Torahs cannot enjoy these taxes, per the ruling of our most authoritative rabbis . ..” The writers add that this is something that is “a decree that wishes to draw us away from our faith” and that the city of Jerusalem can try to extort the funds by force by selling their possessions at public auction, but even so, there is no way that they will be able to pay this fee.
The margins of the letter, on both sides of the page, are filled with dozens of signatures of rabbis and residents, including the signatures of Rabbi Amram Blau, Rabbi Dovid Slatky, Rabbi Chaim Yadler and others.
