Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Friedman was the founder of the Lisker chassidut and a leader of the chassidic movement in Hungary in the 19th century. He was born in 1798 in Ujhely, in Northeast Hungary. He studied under Rabbi Avraham Dembitz and Rabbi Hirsch of Bonyhad and was known as a child prodigy. He studied chassidut under Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum of Ujhely, author of the Yismach Moshe, and stayed in his court for decades. He also visited other righteous people including Rabbi Yisrael of Ruzhin, Rabbi Meir of Premishlan, Rabbi Shalom of Belz and Rabbi Chaim of Sanz, who made his name well-known. He was chosen to lead “Liske” per the recommendation of his primary teacher, Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum. Thousands of chassidim flocked to him from throughout Hungary and neighboring countries to receive his advice and blessings. After the Yismach Moshe’s passing, Liske became the most prominent chassidut in Hungary. Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch was the primary teacher of the righteous tzaddik, known for the wonders and salvations he generated, Rabbi Yeshaya Steiner of Kerestir, whose signature often included the statement “…who served in holiness, by the righteous rabbi of Liske.”
