Long letter the hand of and with the signature of philosopher and diplomat Max Nordau, without the name of the addressee. Paris, 1892. French.
The letter before us was written, as mentioned, in 1892, the most important year of Nordau’s life. This was the year Nordau became acquainted with Binyamin Ze’ev Herzl and the ideas of Zionism, which changed the entire course of his life. From his being an author and a doctor, he became a statesman and a philosopher. His acquaintance with Herzl influenced him so much that he referred to the latter as a ‘prophet’ – no less. In the letter before us which marks the beginning of his political career, Nordau turns to a newspaper editor (apparently one of either the Berlin newspaper, Vossische Zeitung , or the Viennese newspaper, Die Neue Freie Presse , with whom Nordau communicated during that period). As mentioned, Nordau does not indicate the name of the addressee, simply referring to him as Monsieur. It is interesting to note that Nordau writes at the end of this letter that he is including his picture to be printed in the newspaper, yet he requests its return for future use …
