Sir Moshe Montefiore [1784-1885] was undoubtedly the most famous Jew of his time. Over his long life (101 years), he received many honors including knighthood for his activities on behalf of Jews worldwide. He managed to successfully arrange the cancellation of the Damascus blood libel i n 1840, and even received a written commitment from the Ottoman sultan to protect the Jews. Six years later, he traveled to meet with Czar Nicholas I in a failed attempt to arrange the cancellation of the expulsion edict against the Jews in the Western part of the Russian empire. He visited the Land of Israel many times and greatly contributed to its settlement and prosperity. He observed a pious lifestyle. He was particular to take a ritual slaughterer along on his world travels so that he would have kosher meat, and he used to bring food and utensils of his own to events and banquets to which he was invited with world leaders. At his home in Ramsgate, near London, he built a synagogue for his personal use. His 100th birthday was planned as a public holiday for Jewish communities around the world.
