Rabbi Eliyahu Gutmacher [1796-1874] was a prominent Torah sage in Germany, a kabalist and wonder-maker. He was a leading advocate for settling Eretz Yisrael together with his colleague Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalisher, whom he had studied with under Rabbi Akiva Eiger of Posen. He was av”d Pleschen, and – from1839 – in Grodzisk. Masses of people came to him for guidance, blessings for cures, and he became somewhat of a Chassidic leader – a concept that had previously been unaccepted in Germany. He authored many works.
