Interesting text of a “community notice” issued by synagogue trustees to the worshipers in the Aleppian synagogue “Ezra Dibach Ruchama.” The notice relates to synagogue protocol for the upcoming Rosh Hashana regarding seats and behavior during prayer. Ink on parchment, c. 1930s.
“As it is known to all members of the community our custom is to sell seats every year, therefore we will not be busy with …the places…everyone will have a card pasted with his name…children cannot sit in the places for the adults…i t is prohibited to speak during the prayer, particularly during the reading of the Torah, and whoever wants to talk should go outside and come back in when he’s finished. ” On the bottom is a list of prices for the seats, according to the quality of the seat. “Seat: 150 Mil, Couch: 250 Mil.”
