Rabbi Chaim Vegna’s signature appears on the margins of the first title page. He was one of the leaders of Amsterdam and author of Toldot Ya’avetz (Amsterdam, 1858). He is mentioned many times in period literature, mainly in connection with Rabbi Ya’akov Emden, but not exclusively so. For example: In the book by Rabbi Ya’akov Reifmann, Toldot Yemei Chayai , he writes about him, “In my entire life, my mouth has not filled with laughter as it did the day … I received this gift from my friend, the extremely wise and lofty sage Rabbi Avraham Chaim Vegna of Amsterdam.” It also appears in a manuscript from the 18th century with a description of an event in honor of a rabbi in the Amsterdam community (National Library item no. 990036514060205171) which states “the exalted Torah personality, Rabbi Avraham Chaim Vegna.”
